Believe it or not, but it seems that qualitynet, the company that no one seems to like, is hosting an Ubuntu mirror! Yes people, we’ve got our very own ubuntu mirror right here in Kuwait. I’m getting download speeds up to about 3 times faster then the default mirror. It’s currently being updated every four hours and provides the full software repository, distribution releases, and even synchronization for other mirrors (through rsync, naturally). I have newfound respect for Qualtynet 🙂
Anyways, to switch to the new repo, you’ll have to edit ‘sources.list’ in ‘/etc/apt’. one way to do this is to execute this commands sequence:
sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.backup
sudo cat /etc/apt/sources.list.backup | sed "s/kw.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu.qualitynet.net/g" > /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update
and your done. now enjoy your download speed’s awesomeness. This video might also help.

I guess you missed this.
eeeeeeeek!
everyone, just forget what i wrote.
I just tracerouted the two, and apparently both records link to the same domain. That’s weird though, because I could have sworn that there was a major speed improvement when I switched to ubuntu.qualitynet.net. both anxious and I noticed the difference.
now i feel embarrassed.. or at least i should. thanks 3baid for pointing that out.
You brought shame to my blog 😛
just wanted to let people know that there’s a better option.. except that it wasn’t better.
oh well. i guess that’ll teach me to investigate things even though they seemed to be true 🙄
but the method to switch repos remains valid. and if ubuntu’s dns records ever get hacked or are otherwise inaccessable, the url listed here should work.
