I didn’t say security wise neither boot-time wise… I said OpenGL wise…
Long story short, they ran tests using OpenArena, Urban Terror, Nexuiz, Warsaw and X-Plane with resolutions that starts from 800×600 to 1920×1080.
The machines were used are two Mac Mini’s; one with INTEL VGA card and another with nVIDIA VGA card. Yes, can be old, but they should be good.
Results:
Windows 7 is victorious in all cases.
Windows 7 ran on Mac Mini and it perform better than OSX on Mac (And in some cases, Ubuntu did the same).
In some cases, OSX sometimes starts with low fps in lower resolution and starts building up with higher one. Me and GH0S1_R33P0R was like WTF?!
You can all moan and say “Hardware manufacturers optimizes their hardware and drivers for Windows” and “The Mac Mini used is old”…
Well, guess what would happen if we used top-of-the-line machines for each system? The results would even gap more 😛
Still, these results are really early since Steam is going out for Mac OSX and hopefully (I really hope) for Linux… We can check things by then.
Then again, these are only OpenGL tests… Lets not forget that most (if not all) VGA cards are optimized for DirectX not OpenGL 😛
Orly?
I read the article @ phorawhatever a couple of days ago. windows was out preformed by ubuntu on several tests. “Windows 7 is victorious in all cases” is not correct.
but you are right on the gap part. Manufacturers build hardware with windows in mind. and that’s how it’s supposed top be since most commercial games target windows. however, I think this gap will start to diminish once steam is on linux (i think it’s confirmed, not sure though).
Finally, I just want to say that these results are relative. ubuntu not coming on top doesn’t mean it’s useless when it comes to graphics. urban terror (one of the games ubuntu wasn’t good at) runs flawlessly on my laptop, which is not even a gaming system by the way (Quadro NVS 110M). the results simply state that windows managed to beat linux by a few frames.

In case you haven’t noticed, we’re talkign OpenGL wise. Which means it would obviously Ubuntu would outbest windows in some other tests, but NOT OpenGL according to this test… Provide a link please regarding the article you’ve read.
In case you haven’t noticed, once you reach 25~30 fps, you wouldn’t notice the difference between 30fps and 12837398fps … And ~20 frames isn’t few
i’m glad you spelt my name right this time
I was referring to overall performance.

Even though your article was specifically about openGL, it provided an incomplete prospective on the situation. and without providing a whole picture, the data and the conclusions derived from it are meaningless. After all, you can’t judge a car performance by it’s engines rpm.
And even though linux lagged windows by a margin that went as high as 40% (@ high res), it still provided good openGL performance overall (especially when compared to macosx). openGL wise, of course 😉
by the way, relax. it’s just my admittedly slightly-biased take on the subject which i think is correct.
I must ask, did you watch the youtube link? it might help in the unlikely event that you haven’t watched it already.
PS: Steam for linux has been confirmed: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=valve_steam_announcement&num=1
That’s why the first sentence was “I didn’t say security wise neither boot-time wise… I said OpenGL wise…” I only referred to OpenGL knowing that Ubuntu would outbest Windows 7 with other things… Duuh
You should start double read and WHY THE FUCK DID SHE TAKE OFF HER MASK!?
