The more I read about crazy speeds the more I wonder why the hell 4Mbps in Kuwait costs like crazy…
According to Ericsson, they’ve been able to create 500Mbps connection bonding six copper cables in some technology called “channel bonding”…
I can’t really explain things, so I’ll just kick the PC AUTHORITY article to read.
wait isn’t japan doing 1gb internet speed? so this is like 1/5gb therefore 😛
this news sucks
I can’t remember the number, but I’ll assume 1Gbps for Japan like you mentioned…
But to achieve that, they’re switching to Fiber cables which would cost’em alot, while this 500Mbps connection uses copper cables which is known for being noisy and the signal drops as the cable length increases which makes the standard VDSL2 go as high as 50Mbps for atmost 1KM (I think)…
So considering the troublesome media they’re using and the speed they’re achieving, it’s something great in this sense; higher speed for less cost (since copper cables are already there anyways)…
It’s not the fastest, but it’s a cost efficient solution to provide fast connection
There’s a new standard for Ethernet over copper which is still in draft that would allow 100Gbit over copper (CAT7 cables required I think). But that’s over 8 copper pairs for less than 100 meters.
The break-through of the news you’re talking about is pushing 500Mbps over 2 copper lines (telephone lines)!
Well, it would be a good cost efficient solution for ISPs to use existing copper cables…
