According to Consumer Reports, the 20dB drop occurs when you cover the gap on the lower left corner. They tested things with signal isolated rooms so there won’t be any interference and they have some base-station emulator that simulates carrier cell towers.
Seems like the signal formula thing Apple wanted to fix is nothing but a reception indicator correction which (obviously) doesn’t fix a hardware failure.
ouch! apple must’ve felt that one..
