Microsoft’s portable surface

Yes, Microsoft Surface can’t be installed anywhere due to cost and size. So Microsoft Research are coming up with an alternative solution.

To make things short, it’s a combination of a projector and a camera. Not the first to come up with this concept (Light Blue Optics was there first and this is almost identical to that), but it’s nice to know that Microsoft is researching things and expanding their interests.

I’m still waiting for their Screen Concept to be out in the market.

From Xbox360 to Military? Microsoft wouldn’t think so..

I just imagined some kid yelling “OMG!! SOMEONE JUST SHOT MY DAD!!” playing MW2 and then respawn somewhere…

You probably know that USA’s military are training their troops using PC games (So you don’t have to wonder why American soldiers are bunny-hopping instead of walking\running). But they wanted to take it to another level by switching to Xbox360 when Microsoft said “NO!” for the following reasons (Not in order though):

1) Console shortage due to over demand.
2) Buying crap load of consoles with a single game per console isn’t much of a profit.
3) Bad reputation. You don’t want your kid to spend his time with a device that trains military… Really, they’d shoot you one day with a marshmallow gun if you don’t hand them candy somewhere in near future!

I wonder if this actually happened in Kuwait. I’m quite sure Kuwait Police will buy Xbox360 and kick in GTA, Forza for our driving schools, MW2 and Ace Combat 6 for military, Rababa Hero (FUCK! Now I wish this game exists!) for music institutes and FIFA\Winning Eleven for our football sport clubs (Yet they’ll still suck) =P

My adventure with GUST, Episode 4

So I got there a bit early today, at 7:40 AM, I was in the library looking at the PC, it was the screensaver of Windows VIsta. Naturally, I pushed the power button, waited a bit, and then saw GRUB showing up normally. The weird thing was that when it started booting, kubuntu 9.04’s loading bar was there. I know, the kubuntu desktop installation might have changed that, but it shouldn’t be 9.04’s!!? Anyhow, the desktop was up in seconds, but it wasn’t like the last time I saw it! Files were everywhere, pictures and PDFs. I was glad that somebody used it. The first thing that caught my attention was a text file named “info”. I double-clicked on it aaand it turned out to be a log. It wasn’t any log, it was this PC’s log, all of our work was written in it, by work I mean updates and softeware installations. It was made by DeathGram, Thanks :) . The idea really did amaze me! After seeing that I wrote everything I did to keep ourselves uptodate :)

As last time I said about this time, I’d be installing MS Office 2007 for those students who are scared from using OpenOffice. Before I started doing this I saw that DeathGram installed code::blocks, so I had to waste some time on it. After some time I knew that IDEs do not suit me, gcc and gedit are enough for me, so I closed the application. Moving on.

Before starting the M$ Office installation process I realized that the place was getting more crowded by the minute. I knew I should leave the PC for the students, I mean I had my netbook with me. So I installed Secure Shell(SSH) Server, so that I can stay aside and do the dirty work. It went okay, I SSHed and had a hold of the whole PC, then stepped aside. Getting ready for starting the Office installation.

I first though about PlayOnLinux so I installed it, fired it up, and then chose “install new app”. Navigated to MS Office 2007 and clicked install. It started, but after a short while I asked me the path of the CD ROM. I didn’t have the CD they wanted, the official one, instead I had the installer burned on a CD. I tried to fool it, but it didn’t work :( . I then though that I should do it the good old way, manually. I found the tutorial I had followed and worked, then started the process. Installed the specified WINE version and so on until I reached the part where I should start the installer. I tried to copy the file from the CD I had, but it was giving errors! I got out the CD to take a look at it, I wish I hadn’t seen it. The scratches on it were unbelievable, I don’t know how, but there was no way for that to work whatsoever!

I though about the solutions I had, they were few. I couldn’t SSH to my PC at home to get the file from it, cause my main PC is currently disconnected from the network for some reason. So the solutions were I either return to home and get the file, which was impossible since I came with Q8BKman and he had classes to attend(my only ticket to get in) or, my other option, I can re-download it! I chose to download the file. At that time I exited the SSH connection and started dowing stuff on my netbook, I’d copy the installed at the end to the PC. I got to M$ website and clicked on “download Office 2007 trial”. Entered my email and password and it then gave me a trial validation key and a link to download the office suite. The .exe file was downloaded in seconds. I launched it, but it turned out to be one of the most stupid things Microsoft like to do, which I really hate, it was a program to download the Office setup.exe. Just like the .net framework installers, VisualBasic2008 free edition, and Windows7 professional (from msdn academic alliance). Since I started the dumb application in ubutnu, I thought I should leave it. It was as slow as a slug (wait, maybe the slug is faster, yeah definitely!). But what else could I have done, so I minimized the application and started to do my own stuff. After almost 30 minutes I got frustrated, so I wanted to know to where it was downloading. The sizes of the files which were created , from downloading, were not increasing while the download percent was increasing. Something was fishy, I had to know.

So what I did was executing some commands:
locate "" | grep mohammed > file1 #stores a list of all the files in my home directory in file1
sudo updatedb #updated my database to include new files
locate "" | grep mohammed > file2 #stores a list of all the files in my home directory in file2
diff file1 file2 # shows the difference in files

Yes, it did give me the changed files. I navigated to them, but they were the ones which their sizes were not changing :( FAILED! So I said I don’t want to waste 20 minutes to finish downloading and might not work, so I canceled the downloading, planing to download it using Windows. I rebooted and started Windows 7, the one I got for free after KUNIV’s InstallFest, when it showed the login screen I said “AU’A OWW”. I forgot the password, I tried and tried, but didn’t work! You can’t blame me, I don’t use it!! I rebooted and chose Windows XP this time, I didn’t assign a password for my XP so it was okay, and I don’t use it either. I launched the program again to download the office. This time when it was launched I didn’t recognize it, the look was completely different from the one which ran under WINE. This one actually had a progress bar and was estimating the remaining time, I guess WINE isn’t good at this one. Oh yeah, as given by the application, the download was to be completed after an hour and 10 minutes!!! SLOWER THAN EVER! That was insane, but it actually did take that long, maybe some people over there started their bit-torrent downloads, I dunno. I minimized it and moved to the PC, updated the system, commented on the MeeGO post, and surfed the web. After an hour and a lot of minutes, it finally finished, I was then able to take the file over to the PC. Launched it, entered the trial validation key, installed it, closed it, configured it, and messed with wine to make Powerpoint work better and not to crash.

I opened word to check that everything was working, printing was okay, but it told me that the trial will end after two months. I had the solution a long time ago. I backuped the .wine directory which has all the necessary files, including the registry files, so that whenever this trial ends, we can replace it with the backup and have another two months. OFFICE FOR FREE!!! I knew that I wouldn’t be free at the beginning of each two months to go to GUST and replace the backup with the original .wine directory, so I knew I had to put it in schedule. I had the backup of the .wine directory in “dot wine” directory under “.backup” which is in the home folder(PATH=”~/.backup/dot wine/.wine”). So I installed gnome-schedule which is a simple front-end GUI for cron. I added the command “cp -r ~/.backup/dot wine/.wine ~/” and chose to be executed every month. So now I can lay back relaxed.

So now I have installed all what students need, all what remains is maintainance. Sorry, but I can’t let an eye on it since my school is going to start on 21st of this month! So I hope you, DeathGram, can look after this baby! This might be my last episode though, but not for sure maybe I’ll be free on someday and come over to GUST! But I think DeathGram can do a great job if he’s not busy. Anyways, here’s the info/log file so far:

Now this goes well with the pressure-sensitive keyboard: Pressure sensitive touchscreen.

If you remember my previous post about Microsoft’s pressure sensitive keyboard, you will understand how this touchscreen will go well with it.

Yes, it’s not the first pressure-sensitive multitouch screen, but it uses quantum composite tunneling that can tell how hard you’re pressing on the screen. Which, according to the dudes behind this, is more accurate and power saving.

So, you won’t just suffer from accuracy, but you’ll suffer from how hard you press it… It would actually teach people how to touch gently :P

Upgrade from Windows 7 RC to Windows 7 without a clean install!

So I went to INFOCONNECT and it WAS CRAP!, so I ended up buying my longed loved Windows 7 Pro (I’m supposed to buy it atleast 2 months ago)…

I got shocked and frustrated\sad when I read “I need to clean-install Windows 7 over Windows 7 RC” because I have shit-load of files to back up and softwares to reinstall (Most of’em are those that I can’t really find online)… Poking around Google here and there, I ended up upgrading with a little hack…

I’d like to note that upgrading isn’t a recommended option and Microsoft doesn’t support the idea and they inform you that you will have to clean-install if you want to use Windows 7 over Windows 7 RC (Yes they did, but I forgot about it)… Then again, it’s a hustle to do things all over again (Specially since I have no storage)…

Anyway, if you’re upgrading from Windows 7 RC Ultimate to Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional, here’s what you do:
1) Copy the DVD’s content somewhere… In my case, I copied the content in my 4GB flash drive.
2) Edit the “\sources\cversion.ini” file in the copied folder (My 4GB flash drive in my case) and change the “MinClient” to 7000.0.
3) Go to Start and write “regedit” in the search bar, right click on it and choose “Run as administrator”.
4) Go to “Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion”.
5) Change “EditioinID” to “HomePremium” if you’re installing Home Premium or to “Professional” if you’re going Pro…fesional :P (I haven’t tried using “Ultimate” because I don’t own one).
6) Change “ProductName” to “Windows 7 HomePremium” if you’re installing Home Premium or “Windows 7 Professional” if you’re going to install Windows 7 ProstituteImeanprofessional :P (I haven’t tried “Ultimate”, but if you can, give it a shot and lemme know if it works).
7) Run “\setup.exe” in the coped folder (4GB flash drive here) and just upgrade normally.

Took me few hours to actually install Windows 7 Professional this way, but things worked like a charm =D

I hope whoever follows this post can write us back a feedback so we can all benefit.

Microsoft Installfest Tomorrow!

Anxious Nut just tipped me off about a Microsoft install-fest taking place tomorrow. apparently Microsoft finally realized how screwed it is, and decided to give away most of there lousy software for free. the giveaway includes your choice of windows 7 or XP (both professional/pro) and an option of windows server, expression blend three (whatever that is), project pro 2007, SQL server 2008 (don’t know if it’s express or the full version), vision pro 2007, visual studio 2008, XNA game studio 3, and (wtf) exchange server.
For those interested, it’ll be at 5aldiah campus (9 kh). Personally, I don’t know if this is the real deal or not. but it’s worth checking out.
be warned that this may only be for KU students. Take that GUSTers. ha!

Operation “Im in ur interwebz”… It shall be commenced soon…

Well, I haven’t been geeking around for a god damn while… So I might start doing so…

Anyway, Since I planned on going abroad (Canada) to do my studies, and I hate my job so bad that it’s frustratingly not funny to have to work there until atleast June 2010 (I need one year of of working experience in a single work), I thought of tapping into my network.

Tapping into networks isn’t a new thing to me, I got good enough tools to apply MITM in most of the networks I’ve been in without being noticed… And most of’em are public WiFi’s… And god knows what I’ve been able to pull off… Muahahahahaha…

Why I’m doing this, you ask? Well, I’m bored… And I want to poke around with something… Ofcourse, I’m not bullying or abusing anyone, I’m just doing this for personal education purposes…

And since I work in some Helpdesk, I receive phone calls and answer them using CISCO VoIP phones… And because the calls are recorded and I’m only allowed to listen to them at the supervisor’s desk and can’t take’em back home with me, I thought “Why can’t I?”…

Poking around here and there, and I’m now able to record them and take them back home with me without being able AT ALL because I’m not sending anything… I’m just sniffing the packets I’m receiving and extracting the calls from’em using some tools (I actually got some extremely funny calls… I’M NOT SHARING!!!)

And because I’m living in a shitty department that some are digging holes for others (And stupid curiosity), I HAVE to know what’s going on around my department, so I’m extending this a mile or two to tap into my department’s network and see what’s going to happen… If things weren’t detected, I’ma extend it even further and tap into departments around me…

I will, ofcourse, share some of my findings and adventures here… And as a starter, I’ll list what I’m going to use (So far):
1) Microsoft Virtual PC… I don’t want them to know that my laptop is actually doing that… So using a virtual machine is a good bet
2) Windows XP… So far, my tools are all Windows-based… I need to study the Linux-based ones more so I can convert
3) ARP-INJECTION tool… I’m not mentioning the name… If I did, readers will abuse MITM attacks and people will find a way prevent this (If it’s not already available).
4) Winpcap… Most of my tools rely on that
5) Wireshark… I just have to have it around… Habit

Right now, I’m installing WindowsXP in my virtual machine… I might need to actually dedicate a kick-ass computer and turn it into a virtual lab >_>

Microsoft + KIA = UVO

Well, we all know that Microsoft have been working with FORD over their Sync project which, according to some pages I’ve read, isn’t that bad at all…

Now, according to Engadget, Microsoft are working with KIA on a project called UVO (Your Voice) showing their love to each others back in 2008…

Let’s hope there won’t be BSODed KIA cars… =P

Can FORZA do this?: Ordoñez’, GT addict who won a real race!!

One of the main reasons for buying PS3 is GranTurismo… Even though it should’ve been out centuries ago, I will wait for another year or two for that epic game…

Long story short, Lucas Ordoñez, a Spanish MBA student who’s struggling in that major, changed his life to become a professional racer…

I’m not mentioning the details here so you better read the source if you’re curious\interested… Why? Because I have to re-calculate my financial state and figure out a way to building a GT coach…

Oh yea, forgot to mention that there’s an actual GTA (GranTurismo Academy) that, if you did well, you’ll be able to race in real life (Which is how Lucas was able to do so)…

I can already see FORZA fans thinking of tossing their FORZA and XBOX360 console for this…
