ASP.NET MVC 1.0 is going Open Source!?

I know that Microsoft is going to open up more to public developments, but to release THIS under MS-PL is something I didn’t expect…

According to ScottGu’s blog, Microsoft released ASP.NET MVC 1.0 for free with full support under MS-PL license…

I didn’t understand the MS-PL license so I had to read the ScottGu’s blog short version of it, which tells that it’s not platform restricted and you have the right to redistribute and modify things…

I’m sure Dr. Mahbob would be interested in this thing since he’s involved in .NET…

  1. that reminds me:
you can use ASP.net with apache. download mono and mod_mono (i think), modify the config file, restart apache, and your ready to go. just thought i should mention that in case someone was planning to drop ***KD on Microsoft server. (apache and mono are free).

  2. 1) ASP.NET MVC 1.0 is almost open source, the source code is available from Microsoft without having to pay anything to get it
    2) Why would you want to download additional softwares and mess and configure stuff to run ASP.NET MVC 1.0 while you can have it and it’s software without any mess?
    3) It’s not platform restricted, which means you’re allowed to even install it on PS3 (If you’re able to do so anyways) which eventually means you’re allowed to install it on Linux machines\servers…

  3. “1) ASP.NET MVC 1.0 is almost open source, the source code is available from Microsoft without having to pay anything to get it”
you have to agree to the MSPL. i have no problem with that unless it restricted me in some way. and i’m pretty sure that it isn’t “legally” compatible with the GPL.
sure you don’t pay for asp.net but you STILL need to pay for windows.. unless you use apache and linux (which is the whole point behind writing the comment in the first place)

“2) Why would you want to download additional softwares and mess and configure stuff to run ASP.NET MVC 1.0 while you can have it and it’s software without any mess?”
“without a mess” requires windows which in turn requires money. besides, the way you put “mess and configure stuff”, you make it like you need to be a rocket scientist to configure appache. DUDE, IT’S JUST CUT AND PASTE!

“3) It’s not platform restricted, which means you’re allowed to even install it on PS3 (If you’re able to do so anyways) which eventually means you’re allowed to install it on Linux machines\servers…”
    it’s on linux, isn’t it.

my point was to make sure people knew that they can run asp.net servers without paying for anything except hardware and paying there ISP (unless there lucky enough to live next to a free hotspot 🙂 ) not everybody knows that.

Why is it always an argument with you? especially when i’m RIGHT 😀

  4. We’re not talking about windows here, we’re talking about ASP.NET MVC 1.0 … Ofcourse, Windows won’t be open source and probably won’t be for free for the next 2736452976 years, but yes, they’re opening up for more stuff…

Y’know, you could download the source code from them, tweak it and let it run without depending on “mono” or whatever emulation you’re relaying on…

And yes, you can install it on whatever OS you “can”…

Your point is to show people that they can run ASP.NET through mono or whatever without paying money for “WINDOWS”… The whole post is about ASP.NET not WINDOWS…

  5. a39abik.. i was right, you like to argue.

anyways, mono is a framework like .net.
listen up people, what we can get out of all of this follows:

    asp.net+.net framework+windows server>0$
    asp.net+mono framework+apache+linux=0$

“Your point is to show people that they can run ASP.NET through mono or whatever without paying money for “WINDOWS”… The whole post is about ASP.NET not WINDOWS…”
    exactly!

  6. You just want to turn every “Microsoft” related thing to “Linux is free, Microsoft is money”…

  7. i just wanted to let anyone reading your post be aware that they can enjoy asp.net without paying a dime, be it via linux, bsd or any other platform. i just chose linux as an example because it’s the one i’m most familiar with. looking back, i guess i did get a little carried away with the whole “linux is free” thing, and for that i apologize. i just thought some people would be interested, that’s all.

  8. You should check what to write next time… I was really close to a comment or two (or maybe tweak’em) since you really drifted from my point
